What is Bullying?

Bullying is when one or more person abuses their power over another person. Not all conflict is bullying.

So how do you recognise what bullying is?

  • Bullying is repetitive
  • Bullying usually involves an imbalance of power
  • Bullying involves the abuse of this power imbalance by the bully
  • The victim suffers physical and/or emotional harm

Did you know that bullying takes many forms?
It can be:

  • Physical: e.g. pushing, hitting, spitting, hair-pulling, damaging the victim’s property, etc.
  • Verbal: e.g. teasing, threatening, verbal abuse, name-calling, racial abuse, sexually suggestive language, spreading vicious rumours, etc.
  • Non-verbal: e.g. aggressive or rude gestures, manipulating or ruining friendships, systematic exclusion or isolating the victim, sending a note or an SMS
