Dude, Where's My Rights ?

Take Action, Declare Your Rights!

So you want to write your own declaration of rights. How would you go about it?

This action is designed to take you through a collaborative thinking, decision-making and writing process. At the end you will be able to collect all your ideas about human rights and students’ rights and articulate them in the form of a whole-school declaration.

So what? "That won’t change how teachers treat us," we hear you say. Don’t discount the power of the word to influence people in power. And, more importantly, this action could work as a way of uniting the student body. In taking this project on, you will discover the core values you all share and it will give you a point of focus for further student actions and activity.

Next time an issue arises in which you feel your rights are being infringed upon, you don’t have to stand there tongue–tied and frustrated. Having your own student-led policy document will empower you in these situations. It will give you the words to stand up for your rights. Even if your declaration has only been signed by students, it shows unity and so will carry some weight.
