Lesbian A woman whose primary emotional and sexual attraction is toward other women. The term is often used to designate women who self-identify as same sex attracted, as opposed to women who have sex with other women, but who do not self-identify as a lesbian.
LOTE
Language Other Than English
Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse The requirement for a person to report known or reasonably suspected cases of child abuse.
Manipulate
To manage or influence by devious skill.
Multiculturalism
Where a society believes that several different cultures (rather than one national culture) can co-exist peacefully and equitably in a single country.
Participation
In this case means "an active role for students in decisions about, and implementation of, education policies and practices, and of the key issues that determine the nature of the world in which they live" (from R. Holdsworth, 'Student Participation: What do we Mean?' Connect, 126: Dec 2000.)
Prejudice
An opinion formed without enough thought or examination.
Professional Development
Often called ‘PD’. This describes sessions that teachers attend to further their knowledge on a wide range of topics. It could be managing student behaviour to planning for retirement.
Punitive/Non-punitive
Concerned/not concerned with inflicting punishment.
Queer
An umbrella term that that includes a range of alternate sexual and gender identities, including gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender.
Race
People who are believed to belong to the same genetic group.
Racism
Discriminatory or abusive behaviour towards members of another race. The belief that members of one race are superior to members of other races.
Responsibility Having an obligation to look after, respect the rights of those in your community and be accountable for your own actions.
Right
An entitlement, often backed up by law (really more complex than this but for better understanding you will have to read the section on human rights).
SAC
School Assessed Coursework.
Same Sex Attraction
Attraction towards people of one's own gender. The term has been used in the context of young people whose sense of sexual identity is not fixed, but who experience sexual feelings toward people of their own sex.
School Leaver
A pupil who is about to leave or has recently left school, especially at the minimum school-leaving age.
Sex
Whether someone is male or female according to their reproductive roles.
Sexual Harassment
Unwanted bullying of a sexual nature.
Sibling
A person's brother or sister.
SMS
Short Text Message via a mobile phone or handheld electronic device.
Socio-economic Background
How someone is identified in terms of their social and economic static.
SSAY
Same Sex Attracted Youth
Systematic
Characterised by system or method; methodical; planned.
TAFE Acronym for Technical and Further Education.
Torres Strait Islander
Someone whose ethnic background is from the Torres Strait Islands, found between the coastline of Papua New Guinea and the northerly tip of Cape York Peninsula, Australia.
Union
Organisation that represents a common group of people, usually those who are working in a particular industry.
University An institution of higher education having authority to award bachelors' and higher degrees, usually having research facilities.
VTAC Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre, The centre which you apply to in order to gain a place in tertiary education.
Youth Allowance A service provided by Centrelink to assist people with their financial needs whilst studying.
