Aboriginal

Being or composed of people inhabiting a region from the beginning; “the aboriginal people of Australia”.
Apprentice
Someone who works for a skilled or qualified person in order to learn a trade or profession, esp. for a recognized period. Any beginner or novice.
Begrudge
To give, admit, or allow unwillingly or with a bad grace. To envy (someone) the possession of (something).
Bisexual
A person who is sexually and emotionally attracted to people of both sexes.
Career
A profession or occupation chosen as one's life's work.
Careers Officer
A person trained in giving vocational advice, especially to school leavers.
Centrelink
A government agency delivering a range of Commonwealth services to the Australian community some of which include financial assistance and job searching skills.
Citizen
Member of a community (Nation, city, town etc.) who is entitled to its privileges.
Civic
Refers to things in the public sphere, like institutions such as parliament. The opposite is civil matters, which are private - between individuals.
Culture
All the knowledge and values shared by a society. Culture is passed on from generation to generation and often related to peoples’ ethnic backgrounds.
Curriculum
The course and content of what is to be studied at school - it covers everything you do in school.

Deferred Payment
To pay later.
Degree
An academic award conferred by a university or college on successful completion of a course.
Discrimination
The unfair treatment of a person based on prejudice, eg. racial discrimination.
Diversity
The number and variety of people in a certain population, eg. ‘Cultural diversity of a school’ relates to the variety of cultural backgrounds in one school.
Equal Opportunity Policy
A document which is written in order to protect people who experience discrimination and prevent discrimination from occurring.
ESL
English as a Second Language
Ethnic Group
People of the same race or nationality who share a distinctive culture.
Ethnicity
An ethnic quality resulting from racial or cultural ties. Ethnicity is based on socially perceived differences in national origin, language and/or religion.
Federal
Relating to the central government of a federation, eg. Australia.
Formalise
To give a definite form or shape to something
Gay
Refers to someone whose primary emotional and sexual attraction is toward people of the same sex. It is often used to describe individuals who are open about their sexuality and who self-identify as gay. However, the term is most commonly applied to men. The term lesbian is commonly used to describe women whose primary emotional and sexual attraction is for other women.
Gender
Relates to how a person identifies themselves as an individual in terms of being male and/or female. Gender is not determined by what sex your are born as.

Heterosexism
The belief that everyone is, or should be, heterosexual and that other types of sexuality are unhealthy and a threat to society. Heterosexism also assumes that sex and gender (and the relationshop between the two) are fixed and not open to change.
Homophobia
The fear and hatred of gay and lesbian people and of their sexual desires and practices.
Homosexual Refers to someone who is sexually attracted to people of their own gender.
