Mental Health

It is estimated that 1 in 4 families have at least one member currently suffering from a mental or behavioural disorder.

Mental Health issues can include things like, depression, eating disorders, anxiety and grief. These affect many people in our society. Some of the main causes of mental health problems are:

  • loneliness or poor social connections; and
  • lack of knowledge about relevant support groups.

It is important to make sure that you are aware of support networks, teachers, and counsellors who you can trust. Awareness of these contacts can help avoid isolation, and boost your involvement in school and the wider community.

Good relationships with your family and friends can help prevent mental illness. Participation in sports, recreational programs and social networks can also provide great opportunities for meeting people.

Above all, avoid stress by looking after yourself. This means maintaining good eating habits, exercise and taking time out to relax and enjoy life.

If you feel the need to talk to someone, it is important that you feel comfortable with the person and that your privacy is respected. When speaking with your school counsellor, you could ask them their views about contacting your parents.

Schools will have different policies about parents being involved in a discussion between you and a counsellor. Remember, when contacting a counsellor, you could ask for guidance about support networks as well. Some support networks are available through the links below. It is important that, if you feel you need to contact someone, you do so. You are not alone when it comes to mental health.
