The Gender Agenda

So what is gender policy?

Toilet Doors

Gender policy is a set of guidelines which are meant to make sure that

  • Every student has equal access to education and resources regardless of whether they are male or female
  • Every student, teacher and staff member is free from discrimination, harassment and bullying that is based on gender
  • The learning and teaching in and outside the classroom includes everyone and isn’t sexist

Sometimes these guidelines can be found within an Equal Opportunity Policy. This policy aims to ensure that no student or member of the school community is discriminated against because of their gender/sexuality/race/ethnicity/socio-economic background/disability/geographic location. This policy is based on the Equal Opportunity Act (see Law section).

Who does gender policy protect?

Gender policy should protect every single member of the school community (students, teachers, other staff etc.) regardless of their sex/gender. Does your school have

  • A gender policy?
  • An equal opportunity policy?
  • A section about gender in the Equal Opportunity Policy?
  • An equal opportunity coordinator or welfare officer?

If you can’t find any of these at your school, speak to:

The Equal Opportunity Resource Centre Phone: 93540486
