Learning to work confidently with decimal numbers is an important
part of numeracy, needed in all walks of life. It is however difficult
to master. This resource for teachers explains the mathematical,
psychological and pedagogical ideas needed to effectively teach
this topic. It draws upon extensive research carried out at the
University of Melbourne and by researchers across the world. The
resource is based around how students interpret decimal notation.
The Decimal Comparison Tests enable quick diagnosis, around which
targeted teaching can be built. Difficulties in interpreting decimal
notation are a root cause of trouble with all decimal arithmetic
operations, as well as rounding, working with significant figures
and generally making sense of mathematics.
